Giant Madagascar Palm (pachypodium laneri)

The largest known Pachypodium Lamerei can grow to 16 feet or more with time. Like an inverted carrot the trunk is swollen at the bottom and narrows at the top where the lustrous deep green leaves sprout out. Up to inch long spines appear in a spiral formation around the trunk. What a remarkable plant that can combine aspects of a palm with those of a cactus!
