Palmella Soaptree Yucca (yucca elata)

Soapy material in the roots and trunks of this popular species can be used as a soap substitute, and gives this yucca its common name of Soaptree. Spring rewards the gardener with tall upright shafts, sporting pendant blooms of showy white flowers. Slender, sharply pointed leaves grow 2 to 3 feet in length in a tuft at the top of the trunk. Cold hardiest of all the yucca it has been reported to survive below freezing temps.
